Former South African skipper Faf du Plessis has opened up about his experience of playing alongside MS Dhoni at the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Notably, Faf played for CSK in seven seasons.
Speaking on the Prakhar Gupta Podcast, Faf du Plessis praised MS Dhoni’s ability to rely on his instincts rather than overthink pre-match plans, describing it as one of the former CSK captain’s greatest strengths.
“This guy has an incredible understanding of the game on the field. He doesn’t like to plan too much beforehand and prefers to be instinctive during the match. That was his superpower. He would read the game and the players while staying remarkably calm, as everyone knows he is a very composed person. That’s something I want to take from him and apply to my own captaincy,” Faf said in the podcast.
Meanwhile, Dhoni has expressed his desire to play for the franchise in the next IPL season, while acknowledging that his fitness will be the deciding factor. Speaking at a recent event, Dhoni stated that he would assess his physical condition before making a final decision on his participation.
“You will know before December. Doc, I will have to go through the test. You will have to give me the report, and then before December, I will have to see, you know, how strong I am to maybe play one more season,” Dhoni said at an event.
The IPL 2027 retention deadline is November 15, 2026, and the IPL 2027 mini-auction will take place on December 16, 2026, in Goa.
