Former Indian opening batter Sadagoppan Ramesh has reckoned that the discarded Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav should captain a side in the IPL 2027 season, courtesy of his captaincy qualities.
Notably, Surya propelled the Indian T20I side to a title win in the recently concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2026 campaign. In his captaincy, India won 40 of their 52 T20Is and suffered only eight defeats.
Speaking on his Instagram handle, Ramesh sounded confident in Surya becoming a captain of an IPL franchise, adding that the Mumbai Indians (MI) think tank team should consider him as a captaincy option. For the unversed, Surya has occasionally stepped in for temporary captaincy duties when needed for the franchise.
“Surya really shone as a player’s captain. In my opinion, Surya should definitely captain a side in the IPL. MI will be well-served if they make Surya the captain,” Ramesh said.
Further, Ramesh showered praise on the former Indian T20I captain for how he shone as an Indian skipper after communicating properly to the keeper-batter Sanju Samson about his exclusion from the XI during the T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
In a recent interview, Surya revealed how Samson accepted being dropped and requested the captain to focus on the best combination for the team to win the title.
“Suryakumar Yadav spoke about how Samson’s response to being dropped during the T20 World Cup impressed him. At that moment, Surya shone as a captain and Sanju as a team player. Many captains won’t communicate with the player about their exclusion, but Surya made the effort,” Ramesh said.
However, Samson made it to the XI in the Super8 round, eventually winning the player of the tournament award, amassing 321 runs from five innings.
