Former Indian cricketer Mohammad Kaif has advised the Indian skipper Shreyas Iyer to utilise his resources properly in the death overs. While Iyer bowled Shivam Dube in the 20th over of the first T20I against Afghanistan, Reddy bowled the last over in the second T20I.
Speaking on Cricbuzz, the former Indian cricketer asserted that Iyer shouldn’t experiment in the death overs as it could turn out to be a bit costly for the team. While Dube conceded 21 runs in the first game, Reddy conceded a last-ball six against Noor Ahmad.
“Nitish Kumar Reddy bowled by reading the pitch and by adapting. He gave only 12 runs off his first 2 overs, last match he had conceded 30 runs in 2 overs. He had to bowl the last over in the second T20I, which is not his role, his role is to bowl in the middle overs,” Kaif said on Cricbuzz.
“Shreyas Iyer needs to learn that in the future. No one other than Arshdeep Singh and Jasprit Bumrah should bowl the 19th and 20th overs. They should never deviate from that. He should never give those overs to anyone else,” he added.
Nitish, who had a poor outing in the first T20I, came back stronger with a spell of 3/24 in three overs in the second T20I as he was adjudged the player of the match in India’s seven-wicket win. However, Kaif stated that the all-rounder should have completed his full quota of four overs.
“Nitish Kumar Reddy was bowling so well, he had to complete his four-over spell. He bowled the first 2 overs so well, why didn’t you make him complete his spell? I don’t think we needed six bowlers,” he concluded.
