According to a report published on Times of India, the Indian selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, is aiming to give Axar Patel a longer rope as the all-rounder in the Indian One-Day set-up.
With the ICC Men’s ODI World Cup scheduled to be played next year in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Namibia, the selection committee is keen to continue with Axar as the main spin bowling all-rounder ahead of Ravindra Jadeja.
Notably, Jadeja last played in the three-match ODI series against New Zealand at home. However, since then he has been omitted from the ODI squads for the Afghanistan home series and England away series.
“Jadeja’s bowling in white-ball cricket hasn’t been up to the mark for some time. He played in the ICC Champions Trophy in March 2025 because India expected turning pitches in Dubai. His power-hitting too isn’t at the level it was during the 2019 World Cup,” a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI.
The report further mentioned that Jadeja’s inclusion in India’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 was influenced largely by the expectation of spin-friendly conditions in Dubai rather than a long-term strategy.
Speaking about Jadeja’s ODI record, he has amassed 2905 runs at an average of 32.27 and a strike rate of 85.54 with 13 half-centuries. With the ball in hand, he has scalped 232 wickets from 210 ODIs with the best figures of 5/33.
On the other hand, Axar Patel has accumulated 916 runs from 73 ODIs with four half-centuries. With the ball in hand, he has scalped 80 wickets with the best figures of 4/62.
