“I got a 25% hike in the next season” - Amit Mishra recalls his initial IPL days

Former Indian spinner Amit Mishra has opened up on how the Indian Premier League (IPL) changed everything for him, both professionally and financially, after being signed by the Delhi Daredevils (Now Delhi Capitals) in the IPL 2008 season.

Speaking to former Indian cricketer Aakash Chopra, Mishra recalled his conversation with Virender Sehwag on how good performances would lead to him being retained for the forthcoming seasons at a higher price. Notably, Mishra picked up 11 wickets in six games that season, including a hat-trick.

“I knew there were big players. Viru had told me I would only play if I performed. I performed that year, and then Viru called me and told me they would retain me for more money the next year. He is very straightforward. I got a 25% hike in the next season,” he said.

Mishra, who retired from all forms of the game in 2025, made his Test debut in 2008 against Australia under MS Dhoni, scalping seven wickets in that fixture, including a five-wicket haul in the first innings.

Mishra recalled that Anil Kumble was supportive and made him feel comfortable during his early days. He also acknowledged the support he received from senior players, which helped ease the pressure on his debut.

“Anil bhai was very sweet and supportive. He gave me my cap. And there was a comfort zone. I think Dhoni was the captain in that series. He told me to just be myself. He told like you are playing Tests for the first time, I have also become captain for the first time. I had the support of the seniors, and they gave me a cushion on my debut. I thought it would be okay from there, but the same cycle repeated,” he added.
