Former Indian batter and analyst Mohammad Kaif has asserted that the Indian ODI skipper Shubman Gill will make his return to the Indian T20I setup, thanks to his exceptional form in ODIs.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Kaif reckoned that Gill is heading towards the peak moment of his career at the moment. While he acknowledged the competition in the T20I side, he doesn’t think Gill is far from returning to the T20I squad.
Gill played a pivotal role in the first ODI against the West Indies, scoring a match-winning 110-run knock off 108 balls. In the second ODI in Guwahati, he upped the ante, scoring an unbeaten 223 to steer India to a comfortable eight-wicket win and an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-game series.
“As an opener, he gets out early very less. Where will you get him out? The fault is very less. He is very organised and has a strong technique. You will not see him getting out early. It will happen one or two times that’s all. He is a classy batter and I think he will come back in T20Is as well,” Kaif said on his YouTube channel.
After losing his place in the T20I squad, Gill scored 732 runs from 16 IPL games at an average of 45.75 and a strike rate of 163.02, including a century and six half-centuries. Unfortunately, Gill had to lose his spot to Ishan Kishan, who eventually played a pivotal role in India’s successful T20 World Cup 2026 campaign.
“He scores in the IPL. He is figuring things out and it’s not like he cannot play. The doors are pretty much open I feel. He has already proved himself and is heading towards his peak now. There is competition but I don’t think he is far from coming back in T20Is,” he added.
