The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Secretary Devajit Saikia, on Friday, July 17, has opened up on the speculations over Rohit Sharma playing his final ODI at Lord’s on Sunday, July 19, brushing aside all the reports.
Speaking to the reporters, Saikia has revealed that there have been no discussions with Rohit on him playing his last match at Lord’s. He went on to add that Rohit will continue to represent the nation as long as he is in the scheme of things.
“There are a lot of speculations going on in the media about Rohit Sharma’s future. I want to firmly assert that there has been no such discussion that Rohit will be playing his last match at Lord’s on Sunday,” Saikia said in a statement to the media.
“Rohit is a regular member of the Indian ODI team, and he will continue to represent the country as long as he is in the scheme of things. In other words, the Lord’s ODI won’t be his last match,” the BCCI Secretary added.
On Thursday, July 16, The Indian Express reported that Rohit was informed by the Selection Committee to step away from the game in a bid to give youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal more opportunities before the mega event in 2027.
“The selectors have informed Rohit that he does not figure in their scheme of things after the England tour, and they are moving on from him after this series. He wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court,” said a BCCI source.
Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Tests. While he retired from T20Is in 2024, after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title, he retired from the longest format of the game in 2025.
