The Indian talismanic opening batter Rohit Sharma is likely to retire from international cricket after the third and final ODI against England at Lord’s, London, on Sunday, July 19. Notably, Rohit has already bid adieu to Tests and T20Is.
According to a report published on The Indian Express, the veteran batter was already informed by the BCCI Selection Committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to step away from the game in a bid to give youngsters like Yashasvi Jaiswal more opportunities before the ICC ODI World Cup 2027.
“The selectors have informed Rohit that he does not figure in their scheme of things after the England tour, and they are moving on from him after this series. He wanted to continue, especially after working on his fitness. The selectors have left the ball in Sharma’s court,” said a BCCI source.
It’s worth noting that Rohit has already retired from T20Is and Tests. While he retired from T20Is on June 29, 2024, after leading India to the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 title, he bid adieu to the longest format of the game on May 7, 2025, ahead of the England tour.
The Selection Committee has also axed Rohit as ODI captain, replacing him with Shubman Gill. On the other hand, the Indian batting coach Sitanshu Kotak, while speaking at the post-match press conference after the second ODI, has come out in support of Rohit to get back to form in the Lord’s fixture.
“I don’t think that a player as big as Rohit (Sharma) can feel any pressure. He’s too good a player to feel that. Yes, he didn’t get runs. I don’t think that makes any difference. Today, it also looked like he’ll probably get a good innings out. But that’s okay,” Kotak said in the post-match press conference.
