As a result, players from these three countries might have to report early for World Cup or Test preparations, which could result in their missing all or a portion of IPL 2027.

- Travis Head
Australia has the best chance to reach the WTC 2027 final, as they still have 13 more Tests to play and need to win 8 more matches to qualify. Travis Head would be their number one choice to keep fresh for the possibility of playing the World Test Championship final. Head had slammed one of the best centuries in the 2023 WTC final against India to win Australia the mace, and he will be the one Australia will bank on to give them flying starts.
- Kagiso Rabada
South Africa are also pretty likely to defend their WTC title next year. Proteas need 5 more wins from their remaining 10 Tests to qualify for the final. Kagiso Rabada has been their best weapon with the red cherry, and he needs to remain fresh and fit for the WTC 2027 title clash. Rabada was the highest wicket-taker in IPL 2026 in the Gujarat Titans’ run to the final, and while the franchise would want him back playing in IPL 2027, the South African board could step in to prevent their best bowler from potentially getting injured.
- Mitchell Starc
Mitchell Starc has been in great form with the ball in Tests and has now entered the top ten of all-time wicket-takers with 441 scalps, leaving Dale Steyn and Kapil Dev behind. Starc is 36 years old and has already retired from T20Is to manage his workload better. He has played three seasons of IPL on a trot, winning the IPL 2024 with KKR.
However, he missed a few games for Delhi Capitals after not receiving permission from Cricket Australia as he was recovering from a niggle. He did join DC later but couldn’t have an impact as the franchise crashed out of the tournament. Australia will not want to risk his fitness for the WTC 2027 summit clash.
- Josh Hazlewood
Josh Hazlewood had returned to cricket in IPL 2026 after missing a majority of the time due to his injuries. It was a slow recovery and rehab process for Hazlewood, and he returned to help Royal Challengers Bengaluru successfully defend its IPL 2025 title and become IPL 2026 champions. Josh Hazlewood has had issues with his fitness, especially his Achilles, and CA wouldn’t want their premier pacer to get injured once more before an important game like the WTC 2027 title.
- Pat Cummins
Pat Cummins, Australia Test and ODI captain, has already hinted that he might skip the IPL 2027 season to prepare and stay fit for the WTC 2027 summit clash. Cummins barely played any Tests for 13 months or so earlier in the year after suffering a back injury. He made his return to the game in IPL 2026 and helped Sunrisers Hyderabad get into the playoffs.
However, given that he will have a huge workload of a majority of 13 tests coming up, CA wouldn’t want Cummins to take on the extra load of IPL 2027 and instead focus his fitness and form on the WTC final.
