“We have to introspect a few things in the bowling” - Tilak Varma shares positives and concerns ahead of NZ tour

Indian middle-order batter Tilak Varma has opened up on the Indian T20I side’s positives and concerns before heading to the five-match series against New Zealand, which will commence on October 22.

Speaking at the post-series press conference, Varma reckoned that batting performances of youngsters were one of the major positives from the five-match T20I series against the West Indies at home. However, he added that the team has to introspect a few things in the bowling department.

“In the batting, every game we have scored 200-plus. That is a big positive as a team. We haven’t got a proper all-rounder in the team. We have changed between Nitish [Reddy] and [Shivam] Dube. Both have done decently well. Nitish scored crucial runs [in Hyderabad]. Unfortunately, we lost the game, but that is a good sign for the team. A youngster coming in and playing that crucial cameo,” Tilak Varma said.

“Also, Naman [Dhir] bowling under pressure against the West Indies big guns. There are a few good points. As a team, we have to introspect a few things in the bowling. Hopefully, we will do well in the coming New Zealand series,” he added.

Further, Varma noted that the all-rounder Naman Dhir has the ability to bat in both the middle and lower order, adding that it is too early to determine which position would suit him best, while expressing confidence in his talent and ability to deliver on the big stage.

“He also bats in the lower order. It’s too early to judge where he can bat, but he has the skills. We know how talented he is. Hopefully, he can come up with good cameos for the team wherever he bats,” he concluded.
