India will tour New Zealand for an all-format tour in October-November this year. The tour will have five T20Is, five ODIs, and two Tests. The Test matches are crucial for both teams in the context of the World Test Championship (WTC 2027) final qualification.
The T20I series will be played first from October 22 to November 1. The first T20I will be played on October 22 in Christchurch, the second on October 24 at the same venue, the third game on October 27 in Wellington, the fourth T20I will be played on October 30 in Auckland, and the fifth T20I will be played in Hamilton on November 1.
Today, we will check out the best player battles for the T20I series, as both teams have some of the best 20-over players in the world today.
Here are the 5 player battles to watch out for in the NZ vs. IND T20I series:
5. Tilak Varma vs. Mitchell Santner
India vice-captain in T20Is, Tilak Varma, has embraced his new role as the finisher, and he will be tasked with giving the Men in Blue a very good finish. This means he will face talented New Zealand pacers and even their captain Mitchell Santner. This will be the first time that Tilak will play in New Zealand, and expect him to come good in the tough challenge.
Mitchell Santner will be bowling in familiar conditions. He has experience of bowling in death overs as well. He has 142 wickets in 138 T20Is at an economy of 7.17 with the best bowling figures of 4/11. Santner has shown amazing capability of keeping batters tied with his spin and variations in line and length.
4. Daryl Mitchell vs Bhuvneshwar Kumar
Daryl Mitchell is the backbone of the New Zealand middle order and, despite being shuffled up and down the batting order, has managed 1879 runs in 104 T20Is with a strike rate of 140.53. Mitchell has the power to hammer the opposition spinners in middle overs and then take on the pacers in the death overs as well.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar incidentally last played for India in New Zealand itself and will be making his India comeback in New Zealand also. Kumar, 36, is in brilliant form in T20s, taking 45 wickets in RCB’s two IPL wins in 2025 and 2026 and did well in UPT20 League 2026 as well. He will look to add more wickets to his 90 T20I scalps when he plays in the New Zealand series.
3. Finn Allen vs Arshdeep Singh
Finn Allen recently made a 33-ball century in the T20 World Cup 2026 and has made the opening slot in the New Zealand T20I team his own. He has 1663 runs in 62 T20Is with a strike rate of 170.73, with three centuries and 7 fifties, with a best score of 137. Allen will look to take on the opposition bowlers to maximise the powerplay and will look to take on both pacers and spinners.
Arshdeep Singh will be the best bet to counter Finn Allen at the top. New Zealand conditions will aid his swing bowling, and Arshdeep can bring the ball in and out both ways. Arshdeep Singh will love to bowl to Allen, who will be taking him on to gain an advantage.
2. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi vs Matt Henry
It remains to be seen whether Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will get a game in New Zealand or not, but if he does, the Kiwi cricket fans will get their first glimpse of the 15-year-old batting sensation. He has 1723 runs in 42 T20s, with a strike rate of 214.83 and 4 centuries to his name. It will be interesting to see how Sooryavanshi tackles the bounce, swing and seam in New Zealand conditions and how he overcomes that challenge.
Matt Henry is one of the most experienced pacers in the New Zealand lineup. Henry will love to bowl to the youngster, who has rocked the best of the bowlers in the IPL and youth cricket. Henry will need to bowl at the best of his skill, knowing that a slight error from his side means punishment from Sooryavanshi.
1. Abhishek Sharma vs Lockie Ferguson
The fastest bowler from New Zealand might face up to the most aggressive Indian batter in the T20I series. Abhishek Sharma recently completed 2000 runs in T20Is and has been in terrific form, even scoring the fastest century in the format by a full member batter. Sharma has 2036 runs at a strike rate of 195.95 with 3 centuries and 14 fifties.
Ferguson has 76 wickets to his name in T20Is, with the best bowling of 5/21. However, he has pace, something that has troubled Abhishek in the past. But the bouncy pitches in New Zealand will aid Abhishek’s gameplay, as he likes the ball coming onto the bat to play his shots.
