Former Indian off-spinner and commentator Ravi Ashwin has revealed that the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) have offered a head coach role to the former England captain Eoin Morgan. Interestingly, Morgan has also received offers from different IPL franchises.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin has said that if Morgan is appointed as CSK’s new head coach, he should be given at least a four-year contract to turn things around for the Chennai-based franchise.
“I know for a fact that Morgan has been offered the role with other franchises. In fact, another franchise gave him a great offer, but he wanted even more. He has turned down two or three offers from franchises and even from English Cricket. But if Morgan is appointed, he should get a four-year contract, this year plus the next three years after the mega auction. Only then can Morgan turn things around in CSK,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.
“He’s a great option with World Cup-winning experience as captain and has also captained in the IPL. He has a decent head on his shoulders and utilises analysts well in terms of tactics. So CSK can go ahead with him after discussing his vision with the franchise. The question is whether they’ll go for him this year or look to continue under MS Dhoni’s leadership for this year,” he added.
Furthermore, Ashwin has asserted that CSK should fasten the process of appointing their head coach with the IPL 2027 mini-auction coming their way. However, there have been reports of MS Dhoni being the team mentor for the forthcoming season.
“If MS Dhoni is waiting in the wings to be the team mentor, either you go for a coach and appoint that coach quickly, or else there is no point in dragging this along. CSK can just say the likes of Michael Hussey and Sridharan Sriram will work under MS Dhoni. Though Morgan’s name is strongly being mentioned, I have a feeling this will go to Dhoni and be run by the others,” said Ashwin.
“That will be the correct route as well, and the appointment will be too late otherwise. With only one year left for the mega auction, will Morgan take up the coaching role with CSK this year? Will he take on the role for a team built by someone else in the mini auction? I still feel that under MS Dhoni’s leadership, the others will work at least for the next one year,” he concluded.
CSK ended the IPL 2026 season in eighth place after recording six wins from their 14 league matches.
