England skipper Harry Brook has heaped praise on his batters Ben Duckett, Jacob Bethell, Joe Root, and Jos Buttler for putting up a whopping total in the first innings of the Lord’s ODI on Sunday, July 19.
Batting first after winning the toss, Ben Duckett (141), Jacob Bethell (91), Joe Root (74*), and Jos Buttler (41*) were excellent in the first innings as England posted a mammoth total of 387/3 in 50 overs.
“Extremely proud. I thought we fought hard. We communicated well as we did in the T20s and, yeah, we’ve managed to scrape away with a series win against the world number one. We’ve spoken about it a lot, to be honest. We want a set template. I think the way that Beth and Ducky started the innings was phenomenal. To be none down after 20-30 overs and not look like taking a risk throughout that period was an outstanding partnership,” Brook said after the game.
“And then Rooty just does what Root does and cracks on. And then the way that Jos finished the innings as well was awesome to watch. And, yeah, it was just a very, very good all-round batting performance,” he added.
Furthermore, Brook also revealed a game-changing piece of advice that the head coach, Brendon McCullum, gave to him in bringing in Jacob Bethell to roll his arm. Bethell went on to remove Rohit Sharma for 138 runs and bowled a total of seven overs, conceding only 49 runs.
“Well, I went off for an over, and I went and chatted to Baz. Comes back to the communication, to be honest. It’s been outstanding throughout this series and the T20s. And he said, “Why don’t you have a crack with Beth?” And he ended up bowling seven or eight overs straight through. So, yeah, that turned out to be a very vital part in the game,” he concluded.
